Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas will conduct the annual sale of delinquent 2020 property taxes (due in 2021) starting November 15, 2022. Over $226 million is due on 55,857 homes, businesses and land. Less than $1,000 is owed on 14,189 properties in Chicago and 7,162 properties in suburban Cook County.
As stated by Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, "We are bound by law to offer properties having delinquent taxes up for auction. The purpose is to recover back taxes and get the properties back on the tax rolls, not to seize property." Property owners can avoid their taxes being sold in the 2020 Annual Tax Sale by paying the delinquent taxes and interest before the sale begins (information courtesy of PR Newswire).
Investors looking to acquire tax certificates and possibly tax deeds to these tax-delinquent properties must register for the sale and deposit their collateral by November 4, 2022. Please be aware of the legal requirements and deadlines for your tax certificates for which you are the winning bidder.
