Our firm was retained to recover a valuable parcel of real estate in Lake County, Illinois, that had been lost to a tax deed. The owner had been misinformed by the County Clerk as to when the period of redemption would expire. By the time the owner learned of the mistake, a tax deed had been issued and the property had been sold to a developer. Matt Flamm and John Stanko filed a petition to vacate the tax deed order. A judge dismissed the case, but the Illinois Appellate Court sent the case back for trial. After trial, the same judge denied relief. The Appellate Court again reversed and sent the case back for a second trial. A new judge ordered the tax buyer to pay nearly $4 million to our clients. “It took seven years, two trials, and three appeals, but justice finally prevailed,” said Flamm.
